Mount Hope Chapel
By JOHN J. FRIEND, BANGOR, MAINE
1 I wandered to old Mount Hope's Gate
And stood within the ground, And as I gazed along the path
Where rose up many a mound, I thought of those we loved so well
When life was young and bright, Whose bodies rest beneath the sod
Now hidden from our sight.
2 Now General Varney, he lies here
In life so just and true, And Franklin A. Wilson his beloved friend
Whose name is known to you; And standing by that sacred spot
That mark their narrow beds, The silent tears steal gently down
Upon the honored dead.
3 Now Colonel Pullen is buried here
In life was honored too, And Horace C. Chapman whose name brings back
Sweet memories unto you; With Professor Ropes whose name was loved
Have reached that far-off shore, His spirit's pierced that silent vale
He's only gone before. |
